Dr. Chia-Shan Hsu

Dr. Chia-Shan Hsu earned her Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree from Louisiana State University in May 2020, where she studied violin with Professor Espen Lilleslåtten and piano with Professor Ana Maria Otamendi, with full scholarship. Dr. Chia-Shan also holds a Master of Music Degree from Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where she studied with Professor Herbert Greenberg and a Bachelor Degree from Taipei National University of the Arts.

During her studies at LSU, Dr. Chia-Shan served as concertmaster of the LSU Symphony Orchestra, the LSU Philharmonic, and the LSU Opera Orchestra. Concurrently, she taught undergraduate violin students as part of her graduate assistantship and at the Kid’s Orchestra organization in Baton Rouge.

 

Dr. Chia-Shan is a passionate and energetic violin and piano instructor who adapts her teaching methods according to each student, as she believes that every student is unique with individualized needs. She assigns etudes and exercises in order to help students analyze hard passages and techniques, so that they may better understand how to master challenging sections.

 

Dr. Chia-Shan enjoys sharing the stage and making music with colleagues as well. As an avid lover and performer of orchestra and chamber music, Dr. Chia-Shan has participated in myriad renowned music festivals, such as the Aspen Music Festival, the Summit Music Festival, and the Orford Music Festival, where she worked with many other talented musicians and conductors. Her group even won 2nd prize at NOLA Chamber Fest in 2020! In that same year, Dr. Hsu joined the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. She has also performed with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, and Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra.

 

In addition to her roles as a Distinguished Instructor of violin and piano here at Bravo Conservatory of Music, Dr. Chia-Shan is also Head of Chamber Music and Student Ensembles. She finds no greater joy than introducing students to ensemble playing and the wonderful repertoire that chamber music has to offer!
