A native of California, violist Megan Wei is a consummate artist and avid chamber musician. She began piano lessons at the age of four, and began playing the viola when she was seven. Throughout her education, Wei has attended numerous music festivals and studied under renowned musical figures across the world. Wei holds a Bachelors of Music from Vanderbilt University and a Masters of Music from the Manhattan School of Music. She is currently pursuing a Graduate Performance Diploma at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University under the tutelage of Choong-Jin Chang, principal violist of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Wei has performed various chamber music recitals with her quartet at Vanderbilt University, where she studied with John Kochanowski. They also performed at Festival d’Aix in Aix-en-Provence, France, where Wei also studied with Aline Champion, violinist of the Berlin Philharmonic, and Christian-Pierre La Marca, among others, at the Darius Milhaud Conservatory. She has also had the pleasure of collaborating with her teachers Choong-Jin Chang and Masao Kawasaki, along with cellist Michael Mermagen, in a faculty recital in the beautiful Harris Hall at The Aspen Music Festival and School. Her chamber coaches have included Seth Knopp, Laurie Carney, Daniel Avshalomov, Amy Dorfman, Heasook Rhee, and Renata Arado in the United States, and Diana Ligeti and Emmanuelle Bertrand in France.
While Wei was on scholarship to study at the Manhattan School of Music with Samuel Rhodes, she was accepted to study abroad at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire in Paris, France. While in Paris, she studied with renowned viola pedagogue Jean Sulem and assistant viola teachers, Marc Desmons and Adrien La Marca.
As an orchestral musician, Wei possesses extensive experience as a principal violist, and has served as principal violist of the Vanderbilt Symphony Orchestra, Manhattan School of Music Chamber Sinfonia, the orchestra of the Paris Conservatoire, and Peabody Symphony Orchestra. Wei also served as principal violist for the Manhattan School of Music Centennial Gala at Carnegie Hall. During the summers, Wei has attended The Aspen Music Festival and School for four consecutive years, beginning in 2016. During this time, she has served as principal violist for the Aspen Conducting Academy Orchestra and as an Orchestra Viola Mentor with the Aspen Philharmonic Orchestra (APO). As part of her APO mentor fellowship, Wei led weekly sectionals for members of the section and mentored the students throughout the festival. Wei is currently a substitute violist with the York Symphony Orchestra and the New World Symphony.
